Ask any parent and they’ll tell you. Nothing can prepare you for how much your life will change forever, once you have children. The euphoria of bringing home a new baby is one of those intense and incomparable life experiences. Despite the joy that the birth of a new baby brings to a family, one in 6 women find themselves struggling with postpartum depression. Stigma continues to surround the condition. But awareness of the symptoms and impact of postpartum depression has increased in recent decades. This is thanks to health professionals and mothers around the world who have recognised the importance of normalising being open about the experiences of motherhood. But there’s another less well known, and more rare postpartum condition. It’s one which can have devastating consequences not only for a new mother, but more frequently, her new baby.
