DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND | I researched and wrote this series, which begins in mid-1994, when the bodies of married couple Robin and Margaret Bain, and three of their four children, were discovered in their home. The victims had all been shot to death. The only person to survive was the Bain family’s oldest son David, who police quickly focused on as one of the main suspects. The 22-year-old told police he wasn’t home when the murders occurred. David, who arrived home to find his entire family slain, was adamant his father was the killer, claiming Robin had gunned down the family and then taken his own life.
