SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES | I researched, wrote, and interviewed Renae’s mother for this episode, which begins on the winter evening of August 5, 2013. Teresa Marsden was worried. Her 20-year-old daughter Renae, had earlier gone out for dinner with her colleagues in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, but hadn’t returned home. Earlier that afternoon, Renae had arrived home from work early. She was upset and had been crying. Around the same time, Teresa had received a text message from Renae’s boyfriend Brayden, curtly telling Teresa that Renae was threatening to kill herself. Brayden was in jail, serving a sentence for manslaughter, but he and Renae had constantly been in contact via text message for around 18 months. Their relationship had been tumultuous at times. But Renae was deeply in love with Brayden and was looking forward to his release later that year so they could plan their future together. Little did the Marsden family know, that night was the beginning of their search for answers about what had happened to Renae…
